SharePoint Web Parts

The functionality of a SharePoint site can be expanded, using Web Parts, small web applications that have been developed in ASP.NET. Quite a few web parts, which you can use to create a complete intranet in several minutes, are available by default. Based on ASP.NET technology, additional web parts can be continually created.

Web Part Description
Document Library and Review Create a document library if you want to share a collection of documents or other files. Document libraries support features such as subfolders, displaying file versions and checking in and out.
Form library A form library (library: A location on a SharePoint site where a collection of files is managed. The library can display information, including user-defined properties, about each file.) provides a simple way for you to share and track XML-based forms that are used to gather information. For example, you can create a form library for your team's expense report forms. A form library comes with a placeholder file that you need to replace with your template.
Picture library A picture library enables you to share a collection of digital pictures or graphics. You can link to pictures in your library from elsewhere on your site, such as from wikis, and blogs. Picture libraries have several advantages. For example, from a picture library you can view pictures in a slide show, download pictures to your computer, and edit pictures with graphics programs that are compatible with Windows SharePoint Services.
Links Create a list of links if you have links to web pages or other sources you want to share.
Announcements Create a list of announcements in which you can share news, status and other pieces of information.
Contact persons Create a list of contacts if you want to manage data on your team's contacts, such as customers or partners. You can share data between the list of contacts and contact-based Sharepoint compatible programs (e.g. Microsoft Outlook).
Calendar You can use a calendar to store team events, including meetings, social events, and all-day events. You can also track team milestones, such as deadlines or product release dates, that are not specific to a time interval.
Project Task List A project task list in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 displays a collection of tasks that are part of a project. Used in this sense, a task is a discrete work item that a single person can be assigned to (although you may decide not to assign anybody to any tasks). A project is typically a series of activities that has a beginning, middle, and end, and which produces a product or service, such as producing a product demonstration for a trade show, creating a product proposal for stakeholders, or even putting together a corporate morale event. After you create a project task list, you can add tasks, assign resources to tasks, update the progress on tasks, and view the task information on bars that are displayed along a timeline.
Actionables Create a list of actionables to keep track of if you want to manage a number of actionables or problems. You can follow actionables from start to finish, assign them a priority and monitor them.
Custom list Creating a custom list is similar to creating a default list, except that the custom list comes with only a few columns, such as Title. After you create a custom list, you can add columns to suit the purpose of your list.
List based on a worksheet You can save time when you create a list by importing a spreadsheet file, if your data is already in a spreadsheet format. When you create a list from a spreadsheet, its headings become columns in the list, and the rest of the data is imported as list items.
After you import data into a list, you can customize its settings and continue to add data to it, as you would any list on a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services site.
Import worksheet Import a worksheet and display the same columns and content as the existing worksheet. When you import a worksheet, you will need a Sharepoint compatible datasheet editor (e.g. Microsoft Excel).
Discussion board You can set up discussion boards on your Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site to share information and discuss topics with other people.
Survey You can use surveys to ask team members what they think about issues, how to improve your processes, and many other topics. You can collect the results by using several different types of questions, such as multiple choice, fill-in fields, and even ratings.
