Advantages of Hyper-V?

Higher performance

Unlike virtualization solutions such as Virtuozzo, Hyper-V does not use its host operating system to run the virtual machines, but does this via a so-called hyper visor. A hyper visor sits between the physical hardware and the host operating system and enables the physical hardware to be virtualized and therefore can run multiple operating systems. This technique makes it possible for physical hardware to be used very efficiently. One of the biggest advantages is that the resources (CPU, memory and disk) can easily be added to different virtual machines. Another additional advantage is that Hyper-V also supports 64 bit systems and therefore supports more than 4GB of memory.

Snapshots

If you are planning a test on a virtual machine and you are not completely sure it will be successful, it is recommended that you first take a snapshot of the Virtual PC. A snapshot is a photo of a virtual machine at a particular moment. If, for any reason, you want to go back to that time, you can reload the snapshot. Before replacing, you are alerted, because you lose the current settings for the VPC and the system will be inaccessible for a very short time.

Thanks to snapshots you can therefore test new things to your heart’s content, without fear of getting stuck with a system that is no longer operating as it should.

Compared to Virtuozzo

Most of the competition uses Virtuozzo as the virtualization system. Virtuozzo is technically very good because with only one instance of an Operating System you can divide the server into various virtual machines . This has 2 advantages: less memory and processor power are used, because only 1 OS is loaded for all virtual machines together and up to 200 devices can run on 1 physical server. Virtuozzo, however, has a few important disadvantages:

  • Due to the large number or virtual machines, the performance per device is much lower.
  • It is less safe, because 1 OS is being used for all virtual devices.
  • It is less safe, because the virtualization happens on the OS of the server, which has not been designed for this purpose.
  • It does not offer all the autonomy that is expected from a dedicated server, because much of the functionality of the OS is blocked off.
  • All virtual machines operate on exactly the same version of the OS (incl. patches), which for some applications is not desirable. Disk I/O is a bottleneck for virtuozzo.

Conclusion: Virtuozzo is a good server virtualization system for consolidation within a company at a very low cost, but not running within a hosting environment with various OS.

Hostbasket uses Hyper-V as hyper visor for Flex Servers and offers a number of advantages:

  • It uses an architecture with a bus structure, which ensures that the one-to-one communication between the guest machines and the parent machines happens very efficiently and very safely.
  • It is safer because every guest virtual machine is running its own instance of the operating system.
  • It is safer because the virtualization is built into Windows Server 2008, which was especially designed for this.
  • It offers complete autonomy because every virtual machine can have its own safety policy and own patch management, specifically for the application that is running on that server.
  • It is more flexible because the OS for every virtual machine can be different (both Windows and Linux are possible on the same server hardware).

Conclusion: Hyper-V is a safe and efficient server virtualization system that offers the best solution within a hosting environment. Hostbasket Servers are different from the virtual servers of most hosting companies. We offer fully dedicated servers that also offer extra functionalities for high availability.
