Virtualization expert

For many years now, Hostbasket is the expert in virtualization, server consolidation and Disaster Recovery solutions based on virtualization techniques. The support team has a good knowledge of VMWare and Xen, and Hostbasket is recognized as pioneer in Hyper-V technology worldwide.

Server virtualization

Server virtualization is gaining in importance. According to a Gartner study, only 16% of the servers today have been virtualized. In the next 18 months, this number will double.

Server virtualization allows companies to manage their server infrastructure in a more flexible and cost-effective way. Moreover, the carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced significantly.

Server consolidation

The growing popularity of server virtualization can be attributed to the fact that multiple physical servers are housed on one server, without having a negative impact on the applications running on it. This lowers the server costs because the management of all virtual servers can be done through one console.

Disaster Recovery (DRP)

Thanks to virtualization technologies it is possible to store the virtual server as well as the operating system, applications and data in one file and send it to an offsite location. This can be done only once or through a real-time data backup and automatic switchover. In case of a system failure the downtime may be reduced from days to hours or less.

A disaster recovery project is always a tailored solution and depends on the following factors:

  • Desired availability after a failure
  • The applications
  • Linked applications
  • Available infrastructure
  • ....

VMWare

VMWare is the market leader in the field of virtualization. The launch of VMWare vSphere 4 makes it possible to group server resources within a network or one or more data centres in a virtual data centre. Thanks to the vCenter management system the virtual servers can be managed and the workload can be spread among various physical servers dependent on the available resources.

vSphere 4 makes it possible to complete the internal cloud infrastructure with an external cloud where everything can be managed through the same management console. In this way temporary server loads can be handled easily, without any extra investments in infrastructure and a Disaster Recovery strategy can be elaborated so that applications and data are available both in the internal and external cloud.

VMWare vSphere 4 is the successor to VMWare Infrastructure 3.

Hyper-V

Hyper-V is Microsoft’s virtualization technology incorporated in Windows Server 2008. Hyper-V and System Center Virtual Machine Manager are cheap, safe and solid solutions easy to set up and maintain. It’s the heart of the Dynamic Data centre for servers based on Windows Server and Linux.

Xen is the open source virtualization technology developed at the University of Cambridge. The most recent versions are managed by XenSource. Thanks to the Xen hypervisor and the Xen Cloud Platform it is possible to set up a powerful cloud platform that constitutes the basis for utility based computing.

Xen is very effective and supports Windows, Linux and Solaris.

Infrastructure

Hostbasket has 2 data centres (in Lochristi and Mechelen) and rents rackspace in the LCL data centre in Diegem. The 3 data centres are connected through a private network. They behave like one, so the virtual server location doesn’t matter. As a result a virtual server can be migrated easily from one data centre to the other.
